FAQ
What is the flu (influenza)?
The flu is a seasonal respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The flu usually spreads from person to person and is very contagious. Unlike many other viral respiratory infections, like the common cold, the flu can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications.
How do I protect myself and others around me from getting the flu?
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine shot each year. People infected with the flu can spread it to others up to 6 feet away. Symptoms start 1 to 4 days after the virus enters the body. That means the virus is often passed on before the person even knows they are sick.
Who should get vaccinated against seasonal flu?
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against serious illness. Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season.
Can a flu shot give you the flu?
No, a flu shot cannot cause flu illness. The influenza viruses contained in a flu shot are inactivated (killed), which means they cannot cause infection. Vaccine manufacturers kill the viruses used in the vaccine during the process of making vaccine, and batches of flu vaccine are tested to make sure they are safe.
How many people get sick or die from the flu every year?
It is estimated that up to 20% of the population gets sick with the influenza virus every year. An average of 114,000 people are hospitalized and approximately 36,000 Americans die per year due to flu-related complications in the United States.
